Elections and Referendum 2011 - Information in British Sign Language |
BSL:UPTAKE asked the Electoral Commission if their 2011 election information would be made available in British Sign Language (BSL). They have now done so and the BSL is now online:
We have put the following links to the elections and Referendum information in the BSL:UPTAKE Library:
All items: http://www.bsluptake.org.uk/info/?p=1463

In the national sections, for ease of access, we have listed separately links to the BSL, Audio, Booklet and Large Print. In the case of Wales, we have also put links to the Welsh language versions of the Audio, Booklet and Large Print.
We're pleased to say that there is now online a BSL translation of a document that may also be useful to BSL users in making their democratic decisions, 'The Future of British Sign Language in an Inclusive Scotland (Scotland’s Futures Forum, 2010)'. The link to this can be found here:

Royal Society of Edinburgh consultation responses |
The Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) is frequently asked to comment on proposals prepared by government departments, committees of inquiry, parliamentary committees and other public bodies. The Society is able to draw upon a broad range of experts from amongst its Fellowship and marshal input from expertise that lies outwith the Fellowship in responding to these invitations to provide written or oral evidence from an independent and objective viewpoint.
In March 2011, the RSE produced responses to the following consultations:
- The Scottish Government consultation on Delivering Sustainable Flood Risk Management; and
- The SQA consultation on the Course Rationale for the new National 4 & 5 Qualifications for History
These and other RSE responses are available from the policy advice section of the RSE website at:

RSE Inquiry Report: Facing up to Climate Change |
The RSE Inquiry Report, "Facing up to Climate Change: breaking the barriers to a low-carbon Scotland", launched on 1 March. The report identifies the obstacles that are stopping us from taking steps towards a low-carbon society. It recognises that there is a wealth of activity at EU, UK and Scottish level, including local authorities, communities, households and civil society, but that there is an acute need for coherence and integration between these levels.
The report sets out 10 Primary Recommendations aimed at helping policy makers to design policy in such a way that it overcomes the barriers. It calls for government and organisations to embed low-carbon policies across all functions and for closer engagement between people, civil society, market and state. It also sets out 30 sector specific supplementary recommendations.
The Report is the result of an extensive consultation process across Scotland during which evidence was taken from over 110 public, private and third sector organisations, as well as from around 40 individuals, a number of public meetings were held around Scotland, involving some 400 people, and a national Schools' Competition.
The Summary and Full reports can be accessed from:
